LILY OF THE VALLEY FLOWER

LILY OF THE VALLEY FLOWER

With its scientific name of Convallaria majalis, Lily of the Valley is a fragrant but pestilential forest flowering plant. It is a native to the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe. It is believed to be the lone species in the genus Convallaria, but it remains unconfirmed.

According to numerous legends, the lily of the valley symbolizes the tears of Mary. It is her tears which she shed at the cross that turned out to be the lilies of the valley. With this, the flower is often called ‘Our Lady’s Tears’. Moreover, another legend says it is the blood of St. George springing out during his battle with the dragon.
